Making Things Right
Kaffarah is the atonement prescribed by Allah for specific acts such as a broken oath, a failed fast, or an unlawful act during Hajj. It is not voluntary. It is a requirement that comes with a specific trigger, and once that trigger occurs, the obligation follows.
The Quran is clear on this: “Allah will not impose upon your souls a burden beyond its capacity. But he will impose upon you that which you have earned. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:286)
When is Kaffarah required?
The most common situations:
Breaking an oath (yan): You swore by Allah to do or not do something, and you broke that oath. The atonement is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If you cannot do any of these, you fast for three days. (Quran 5:89)
Hajj-related violations: Hunting during ihram, or failing to complete a required act of Hajj. The atonement is a dam; the slaughter of an animal. (Quran 5:95)
Broken fast (non-Ramadan): If you broke a voluntary fast or a fast of expiation, the atonement may involve feeding or fasting, depending on the circumstance.
What is a Dam?
Dam specifically refers to the animal sacrifice required as atonement during Hajj or Umrah. The animal must meet the same quality standards as Udhiyah: healthy, of proper age, free from defects. A sheep, goat, or 1/7 of a cow or camel are all acceptable.
The meat from a dam is not distributed to the person who made the sacrifice. It goes entirely to the poor and needy. This is what distinguishes it from Udhiyah.
Who decides whether you owe a Kaffarah?
You should consult a qualified scholar or imam. Not every situation triggers the same atonement, and the specifics matter. If you are unsure whether a Kaffarah applies to your situation, ask before you act, not after.

For Dam specifically (Hajj-related), we coordinate with pilgrims before they travel. Many of our international customers arrange their dam in advance so it is completed before they enter ihram.
