Giving Because You Want To

Tawwawu’ is the voluntary sacrifice with no obligation, no vow, no atonement behind it. You do it because you want to. Because you are grateful. Because you want to draw closer to Allah on a day that is not Eid, is not a birthday, is not a milestone, just a day on the calendar.

This is the most personal form of sacrifice. There is no one telling you to do it. There is no deadline. The only requirement is sincerity, that your intention is purely for Allah.

 

Why do it?

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

مَا عَمِلَ آدَمِيٌّ مِنْ عَمَلٍ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ إِهْرَاقِ الدَّمِ، إِنَّهَا لَتَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِقُرُونِهَا وَأَشْعَارِهَا وَأَظْلَافِهَا، وَإِنَّ الدَّمَ لَيَقَعُ مِنَ اللَّهِ بِمَكَانٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقَعَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ، فَطَيِّبُوا بِهَا نَفْسًا

“No deed performed by a human being on the Day of Nahr is dearer to Allah than the shedding of blood. The sacrificed animal will come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, its hair, and its hooves. And indeed, the blood is accepted by Allah at a place before it falls to the earth. So be content with it.” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, 1493)

That hadith was not limited to Eid. The principle applies to any voluntary sacrifice made in Allah’s name. The reward is the same. The acceptance is the same. The only variable is your intention.

 

Common reasons for tawwawu’:

Gratitude (shukr): A job, a recovery, a safe return from travel, a new home. You are thankful, and you want to show it in a way that goes beyond a du’a.

Repentance (tawbah): You have done something you regret. You want to make it right. A sacrifice is a physical, tangible act of turning back to Allah.

Consistency: Some families commit to a regular tawwawu’, monthly, quarterly, or on specific personal dates (anniversaries, milestones).

No specific reason: You just want to. You have the means, you have the intention, and you want to do it. That is enough.

 

What makes it different from the others?

 

The last point is important: with tawwawu’, you decide how the meat is distributed. Keep it all. Give it all away. Split it however you want. There is no fixed rule.
