The Sacrifice that Remembers Prophet Ibrahim (AS)
Every year, during the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, Muslims around the world perform an act that goes back to the very beginning of this Ummah. Ibrahim (AS) was asked to sacrifice what he loved most, his son Ismail (AS) and he obeyed. Allah replaced the boy with a ram. That single act of submission is the foundation of everything we do on the Day of Nahr.
Udhiyah is the annual sacrifice performed between the 10th and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah. It is not optional for those who can afford it but the Prophet ()ﷺ made it a strong Sunnah. In addition, many scholars consider it obligatory (wajib) for anyone who meets the nisab threshold of wealth. But even where it is considered Sunnah, the reward is immense.
What the Prophet ()ﷺ said about it:
“There is no deed that is dearer to Allah on the Day of Nahr than shedding blood. The sacrificed animal will come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves, and the blood is accepted by Allah before it reaches the ground. So sacrifice with a good heart.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1491)
What qualifies as a valid animal:
1. Sheep: Minimum 6 months old, healthy, no missing teeth, no broken horns, no lameness.
2. Goat: Minimum 1 year old, healthy, no missing teeth, no broken horns, no lameness.
3. Cow: Minimum 2 years old.
4. Camel: Minimum 5 years old.
6. One animal is sufficient for one family. For cows and camels, up to seven people may share a single animal, each taking a 1/7 portion.
How the meat is distributed:
The Sunnah divides the meat into three parts:
1. One-third for the family who made the sacrifice.
2. One-third for relatives and neighbors.
3. One-third for the poor and those in need.
The above is not a suggestion but the established practice. The Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions followed it consistently.
Who can make Udhiyah on your behalf?
Anyone. You can assign your Udhiyah to a family member, a friend, or a trusted service provider. The key condition is that the person performing the sacrifice does so with the intention (niyyah) on your behalf, and the animal is slaughtered in a Shari’ah-compliant manner.
