A Promise Made to Allah
A nazar is a vow. You make a promise to Allah for instance “If He grants me this, I will do that” and once the condition is met, the vow becomes binding. It is not a suggestion. It is a debt you owe to Allah, and it must be fulfilled.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
مَن نَذَرَ أَن يُطِيعَ اللَّهَ فَلْيُطِعْهُ، وَمَن نَذَرَ أَن يَعْصِيَهُ فَلَا يَعْصِهِ
“Whoever makes a vow to obey Allah, let him do so. And whoever makes a vow to disobey Allah, let him not do so.” (Sahih Bukhari, 6696)
What does a nazar typically involve?
Most commonly, a nazar takes the form of a sacrifice for example “If my child recovers, I will offer a sheep in Allah’s name.” Or, “If I get this job, I will fast three days.” Or “If we arrive safe in this journey, I will give charity.”
When the nazar involves an animal sacrifice, the rules are straightforward:
The animal must meet the same standards as any other sacrifice
The meat is distributed according to the type of nazar (to the poor, to the family, or a combination) The sacrifice can be performed at any time. There is no seasonal restriction
Can you delay fulfilling a nazar?
No. Once the condition is met, the obligation is immediate. Delaying without a valid excuse (illness, travel) is itself a sin. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
لَا طَاعَةَ فِي مَعْصِيَةٍ، إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ
“There is no obedience in disobedience. Obedience is only in what is good.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 7257 and Sahih Muslim 1840)
If you made a nazar and the condition has been met, do not let it sit. Fulfill it.
What if you cannot afford the nazar you made?
Consult a scholar. In some cases, the atonement can be adjusted for example, feeding poor people instead of sacrificing an animal. But do not simply abandon the vow. That is worse than adjusting it.
