Sadaqah
Giving Without Being Asked
Sadaqah is the broadest category of voluntary giving in Islam. It includes money, food, clothing, time, even a smile. But in the context of livestock and sacrifice, sadaqah takes a specific form: you slaughter an animal and give the meat entirely to the poor and needy.
This is different from Udhiyah (where the family can keep one-third) and different from nazar (where the distribution follows the terms of the vow). In sadaqah, the family keeps nothing. Every portion goes to those in need.
Why sacrifice as sadaqah?
Because meat is a gift that lasts. A bag of rice is useful, but a portion of fresh meat from a properly slaughtered animal carries a weight that a grocery store purchase does not. It is a gift that says: someone thought of you, specifically, and made sure you had something good to eat.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ الصَّالِحِ مَا دَامَ عَلَيْهِ صَاحِبُهُ وَإِنْ قَلَّ
“The best charity is that which is given regularly, even if its little.” (Sahih Bukhari, 6464)
A single act of sacrifice-as-sadaqah can feed a family for weeks. That is not little.
When is sadaqah sacrifice most meaningful?
Any time. But it carries particular weight during:
Ramadan, as part of the broader spirit of giving.
Before major life events, as a preemptive act of gratitude.
In response to community need, a neighborhood affected by flood, displacement, or hardship.
As a regular practice, some families commit to a monthly or quarterly sacrifice.
Who receives the meat?
The poor, the orphaned, the elderly, the newly arrived, the struggling family next door. You do not need a formal list. You need to know who in your community is going without. If you are in Shimoni, that is your neighborhood. If you are in the US, that is the local Muslim community or the broader neighborhood.
